Microsoft Axes Cortana Ai on Windows

In favour of Copilot
by Joe Wilcock on August 14, 2023

In a move announced back in May, Microsoft has revealed that Cortana, its digital voice assistant within the Windows ecosystem, is set to be phased out. The term used, "deprecated," is essentially a corporate synonym for being discontinued or "killed off."

To fill the void left by Cortana, Microsoft is introducing Windows Copilot, an AI-driven personal assistant. While possessing functionalities akin to its predecessor, Copilot stands apart with its use of a generative language model and a more subdued personality. Copilot is designed to address user queries about Windows, provide document summaries, suggest Spotify playlists, and undertake similar tasks. Notably, Bing Chat also comes as part of this revamped AI lineup.

For users who haven't yet disabled Cortana, her continued presence hinges on the decision to apply the latest Windows 11 update. Opting for the update means Cortana will no longer be accessible on the PC, joining the ranks of discarded Microsoft assistants, including the well-known Clippy.

A glimmer of continuity can be found for those who have grown attached to Cortana, as revealed in Microsoft Support's "End of support for Cortana in Windows and Teams" article. This article indicates that Cortana will persevere within the realm of Outlook mobile, albeit in a new role. Here, Cortana's voice will read aloud emails to users, preserving a semblance of her identity.

This transition underscores Microsoft's evolving approach to AI technology, as it seeks to offer users new and improved AI-powered experiences. As Cortana fades into the background, users will have the opportunity to interact with the more refined capabilities of Windows Copilot, leaving behind an era and ushering in a new chapter in AI-driven digital assistance.
